The brief:

Phase one of the project has been successfully completed. Prior to commencement, Sweet broke out and removed the old foundations and slabs of the previous development. A 25,000m3 imported pile mat was installed to create a stable working platform, this then supported the construction of a 300m long concrete piled retaining wall to secure the perimeter. Cut-and-fill operations then followed, were we completed a 75,000m³ cut, which was then removed off-site leaving the site level, stable and ready for the next stage of construction.

Key challenges:

  • Dealing with noise-sensitive neighbours, including both residential and commercial properties
  • Ensuring a high standard of security
  • Limited space available for logistics, deliveries and parking
  • Overseeing various specialist contractors directly engaged by clients
  • Meeting the criteria for a Breeam Excellent rating

The solution:

  • Collaborate with sustainability and BREEAM consultants to ensure that all targeted BREEAM credits are successfully attained
  • Hold regular planning and coordination meetings with the client’s direct contractors
  • Provide off-site parking for staff and operatives to minimise congestion and create additional laydown space
