Women are shaping every part of today’s construction industry – from project management, engineering and sustainability to commercial management, health and safety, governance and senior leadership. As the sector continues to evolve, more employers are taking meaningful steps to attract diverse talent, support career progression and build inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Construction offers a diverse range of career paths, competitive salaries, strong career progression opportunities and the chance to make a lasting impact on communities across the UK. Whether entering through higher education, apprenticeships or vocational training, there are more routes than ever for young women to build successful and rewarding careers in the sector.

In this article, we explore why more women are choosing careers in construction, the pathways available, the challenges that remain, and how organisations such as Sweet Projects are helping empower the next generation of construction women.

Challenges Women Still Face in Construction

Gender Imbalance Across the Industry

While progress is being made, women remain underrepresented across much of the construction sector.

According to the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), women make up approximately 15% of the UK construction workforce, with only around 2% working in site-based roles.

However, encouraging trends are emerging. CITB data shows women now account for more than 15% of new entrants into construction apprenticeships, compared with fewer than 10% just ten years ago. With 28.5% of our leadership positions filled by women at Sweet Projects, we’re committed to addressing this imbalance.

Improving representation remains essential for creating a more balanced and inclusive industry.

Why More Women Are Choosing Careers in Construction

A Changing Industry Landscape

The construction sector is undergoing a significant transformation. Increasing focus on diversity and inclusion has encouraged employers to challenge perceptions and create workplaces that better reflect the communities they serve.

More women are stepping into leadership roles across the construction industry. However, there is still progress to be made. According to research by Simian Risk, women occupy just 7% of senior management and board-level positions within construction companies. At Sweet Projects, we’re proud that 28.5% of our Group Board are women – a figure that we’re sure will only continue to grow.

Despite industry challenges, there is growing momentum behind initiatives dedicated to empowering women and creating greater equality across the sector. Industry events, awards programmes, partnerships and community-led networks are helping celebrate success, share experiences and inspire future leaders.

Diverse Career Opportunities Across the Sector

A common misconception is that construction careers are limited to site-based roles. In reality, the industry offers a broad range of opportunities across numerous disciplines.

Career paths include:

  • Commercial and quantity surveying roles
  • Technical and design positions
  • Engineering and MEP careers
  • Sustainability and environmental management
  • Health and safety leadership
  • Preconstruction and bid management
  • Procurement and supply chain management
  • Governance and compliance
  • Marketing and communications

This diversity allows women to explore careers aligned with their interests, skills and ambitions while contributing to projects that improve lives and communities.

Career Progression

Construction offers strong earning potential and long-term career development opportunities.

Many construction careers command highly competitive salaries, particularly in technical, commercial and leadership disciplines. At Sweet Projects, salaries are aligned across bands to help address the gender pay gap and ensure employees are rewarded fairly based on experience and performance.

While the average UK gender pay gap stands at 6.9% as of April 2025, many organisations are taking proactive steps to reduce disparities and promote equality across their workforce.

The sector also provides excellent opportunities for career progression. Professionals can develop transferable skills that allow them to move between projects, disciplines and sectors throughout their careers.

Pathways Into the Construction Industry

University Degrees and Higher Education

Higher education remains a popular route into the construction industry.

Relevant qualifications include:

  • Construction Management degrees

Academic pathways provide valuable technical knowledge while many employers offer training and development opportunities alongside employment to help graduates gain practical experience.

Apprenticeships and Vocational Routes

These programmes allow individuals to earn while they learn, combining workplace experience with formal education and professional qualifications.

Popular routes include:

  • Trade apprenticeships
  • Construction management apprenticeships
  • Technical apprenticeships
  • NVQs and vocational qualifications
  • Government-supported skills programmes

Apprenticeships offer an accessible pathway for students and young women looking to gain industry knowledge, develop practical skills and prepare for long-term careers.
