Wherever there is a connection to a worthwhile cause within the Sweet Projects family, we help where we can.
Helping Hands Portsmouth is a dedicated, passionate and (frankly) inspirational group of individuals who volunteer to help and support Portsmouth’s homeless and vulnerable community.
For the past eight years, they are regularly out and about in the city, giving hot food and drink, and anything else that is needed. Winter is a time when their care is especially welcomed. They provide regular hot breakfasts for up to 45 rough sleepers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and also provide a roast dinner, pudding and snacks each Sunday for up to 70 homeless and vulnerable individuals, as well as providing Christmas Dinner.
Their admirable work also extends beyond providing meals – as they fundraise to help especially vulnerable individuals in other ways. For instance, they provided bed and breakfast over a weekend to a 17-year-old girl who was pregnant and on the streets, until she could be seen at the housing department on the Monday. They also funded bus fares so that a young homeless man could visit his father in the local hospice in his final days.
They regularly help people who are ready to get off the streets find the up-front £100 deposit they need to secure a room in a shared house. This gets re-paid by the Council whose processing time is too slow to assist on the day.
They rely entirely on donations and are made up of a small band of loyal volunteers. As they put it, they rely on community kindness.
Sweet Projects supported with a Christmas donation to enable their marvellous work to continue after the festive period, well into this new year – a really tough time for many. A link to the Helping Hands Facebook page is below. Please support them, if you can.
