Careers in Construction Month: Part 1

Date: October 7, 2024

October marks Careers in Construction Month, so it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the incredible opportunities and rewarding career paths within the industry. At Sweet Projects, we’re passionate about building more than just structures. We’re building careers and communities.

Throughout this month, we’ll be sharing inspirational Q&As with our talented people, highlighting the diverse roles and experiences that make up our team.

From project management and sustainability, to technical innovations and teamwork, our ‘Sweet People’ bring their careers to life.

Question 1

What skill do you employ most in your role? How did you learn this skill – and who from?

Andrew Waugh,
Technical Manager – Electrical

“In my role it is the ability to understand design concepts from multiple designers and construction specialists, their requirements and interfaces with others. With this knowledge I can optimise the design coordination and communication between teams to achieve highly successful project outcomes. I have learnt this skill from two decades in the construction industry, working with outstanding individuals on highly complex projects.

At Sweet Projects our whole team brings a wide range of specific technical expertise from across the construction industry. With everyone’s safety at the heart of our decision making, and a shared desire to embed the best modern-day design and construction methods across all our projects. Coupling our technical expertise with our sector specific individuals who understand our client’s aspiration and operational requirement, we can provide tailored turnkey solutions to our new and existing clients.”

Question 2

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a company like Sweet Projects?

Russell Smith,
People and Performance Manager

“Sweet Projects is looking to differentiate themselves from the standard we currently see in the construction industry, by being more creative and innovative.

From working with the right people, clients and partners, to ensuring our business and our colleagues have the ability to grow with us, we are on a journey to be a high-performing, sustainable and established construction company.

Our vision is to be entrusted with the delivery of exceptional projects for our industry leading client partners.  To enable our business to thrive, we choose exceptional, hand-picked talent to be at the heart of our business, and at the head of our clients’ projects, taking the risk out of complex projects through expert problem solving, excellent service and consistent results.

Because of this, our strategy for hiring into the Sweet Projects family is not only based on competency, but on behaviour, attitude, and values.  We must, as a business, maintain our principles… We are only as successful as the amazing people we employ.

Sweet Projects has a wide range of expertise, ranging from the typical construction related roles such as Site Management, Project Management and Quantity Surveying, to non-specific construction roles, including HR, IT, Finance and Sustainability.

With this in mind, if you are considering joining Sweet Projects, we want to see the right attitude.  It is vital that companies are able to establish someone’s personality, and attitude towards work and colleagues, as well as their competence in the role.  So, when thinking of an application, ensure that you do some proper research on the company, and ensure that your values align.  Being part of a competent team is good, but being part of a competent team who are all working to the same goal with the same attitude and value – that is GREAT.  If this all aligns, you will have a fulfilling and successful career, and will do so with a smile.”
